Call Me a Curmudgeon
It was reported in the May 18th issue of the New York Times that “Alongside the explosive growth of online video over the last six years, time spent on social networks surpassed that for e-mail for the first time in February, signaling a paradigm shift in consumer engagement with the Internet.”
I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing.
As a father of a GenX’er and his younger sibling who is on the cusp between X and Y, I’ve definitely realized that young adults communicate very differently than us older types. (There I said it — OLD). Yet, I become a bit concerned that with these wonderful types of communication tools we begin to lose a sense of identity and purpose. We quickly become a bunch of lemmings following the latest and hottest trend – without really thinking what it portends for privacy as well as the ability to truly make friends rather than acquaintances.
Am I the only one thinking this way?
