Tipping Point
Malcolm Gladwell’s text, which I read several years ago, observed that “tipping points occur when the momentum for change becomes unstoppable.” I wonder if our industry is reaching that point regarding digital print technologies.
I’ve spoken to dozens of individuals (print producers and suppliers) over the past few weeks, and many are realizing that when we get out of this recession, we are not going back to the good ol’ days.
With continued pressures for costs reduction, print producers are looking for as much automation as possible, which means more digital workflow solutions. Along with the push towards shorter and shorter runs and individuals willing to adopt/adapt to on-line ordering, the pressures for digital printing solutions are beginning to look like they may be reaching a possible tipping point — after years of hype. If ink jet print technology truly does become reality in the next 2-3 years — Katy, bar the door.
